Educating on Regenerative Therapy techniques and working with paralyzed Dachshunds- wiener dogs. We help you with your dog or provide safe refuge for a Dachshund that has become paralyzed and can't or won't be taken care of in their current home." The Lopez family has built their life and home with this mission at the center.

Sonja and Rico Lopez are the owners and founders of the Broken Wiener Refuge. Their passion for animals is evident by the special care that each of the dogs at the refuge receives on a daily basis. As a former surgical tech with a background in neuro and ortho cases, Sonja's own experience was instrumental in the development of unique techinques to help dogs who are NOT candidates for surgery. The Regenerative Therapy of the Broken Wiener Refuge was born of love, education, experience, and dedication.

The love for the dogs has always been the driving force that inspires Sonja and Rico. Sonja's personal experience with a spinal injury and surgery made for a unique learning opportunity. Many of the physicians she has worked with have been generous in sharing and teaching. Vienna, Tucker, and Shorty were the first IVDD dogs to benefit from her interest in the field. She simply began to apply the techniques she had learned, along with love, and an absolute belief that these dogs can live an amazing life.
You'll find every day items like detergent and diapers that greatly help support the basic, daily care of our pups.
Your donation will make a difference in the lives of each and every BWR dachshund. Please support our mission to help care for these precious babies.
Sonja, co-founder of Broken Wiener Refuge, introduces Dunkers, one of BWR's beloved residents.

We rarely adopt animals from the refuge. When they are surrendured to us from an individual or in partnership with Low Rider Dachshund Rescue FL, it is because surgery to repair the spine is not an option. They need specialized care in order to live a full life. Sonja has developed a system that involves very specific exercises, equipment, and even diet to help them live their best lives. ONCE in a great while, we find someone who is willing and able to learn the specialized care one of them needs and under those circumstances, we have adopted them out. Otherwise, they live happily ever after at the Broken Wiener Refuge.
Yes, we always need funds to help with the dogs in our care. There is a donate button at the top of the page as well as a link to the Amazon Wish List for products we use daily.
If you are skilled with social media, writing articles, or fundraising . . . we can use help in these areas! One of the things we wish people understood is that we have limited time. ALL our spare time is spent caring for the special needs of the dogs, and they come first. Whether it be a bake sale, car wash, online, or major undertaking, having individuals or companies sponsor and organize fundraisers can be a real life-line for the refuge.
We try to help as many animals as possible, but we have limited space and resources. If you need to surrender your pet, please contact us to discuss your options. We will do our best to help you find a new home or help you learn to keep them home with care. When space is available, we always try to help. We are currently at capacity at the refuge but will help direct you so you can make the best decision possible for your beloved dog.
